You have the power to change lives! Become a mentor for a young person in your community.

We need Mentors!

A mentor is an adult volunteer who spends time with a child in a supportive and friendly manner. If you are at least 18 years of age and have resided in the tri-state area for at least 6 months, you have the power to change your life and the life of a child who needs you by stepping up, having fun, and becoming a friend, a teacher, a listener, a guide, a supporter and a confidante.

Man Power Needed!

Most of all, we need men over the age of 18 years who are interested in serving as a friend and role-model to one of the many young we currently have on our waiting list.

The Commitment

Volunteers commit to at least 8 hours a month for one year.

The majority of our matches meet for 4 hours every other weekend but the time you spend with your Little is arranged between you, the parent/guardian and your Little. You don't have to rearrange your life to be a Big -- just incorporate your Little into your routine!

An outing could be simple activities such as having a picnic at a park, cooking, playing basketball, going to football games any activity that enhances the friendship and contributes to an environment where the young person can develop positive self-esteem and life direction.

The Process

If you are interested in becoming a “Big” simply complete an application form.

Weblink application form or contact volunteer@bigsnyc.org to obtain a paper form.

After we receive your application, we require all mentors to go through a detailed screening process which includes: submitting references, a background check, and a comprehensive interview with a BBBS of NYC professional social worker?

Once this process is complete we will provide you with full training and then we will match you with a young person who best fits your personality and preferences.

More detailed information is located at: http://www.bigsnyc.org/v-orient.php

Still want more information? Why not come to an in-house orientation session?

If you are interested in becoming involved with BBBS of NYC, but are currently unable to volunteer as a mentor, joining our Young Professionals Committee is another alternative to support BBBS of NYC.

About the Young Professionals Committee

Our Young Professionals Committee is a diverse group of dedicated men and women who volunteer their time, talents and energy to support BBBS of NYC’s many mentoring and educational programs.

Ranging in age from 21-35, these dedicated members help promote BBBS of NYC by actively raising funds through various volunteer activities and special events. Members can choose to participate in a variety of sub-committees, focusing on specific aspects of the events including:

  • Marketing
  • Sponsorship
  • Silent Auctions and Raffles
  • Hospitality
  • Volunteer Recruitment

As a member of the YPC, not only will you be fundraising for one of the oldest youth organizations in New York City, you will have the opportunity to plan and attend great parties, meet new people, network, and most importantly HAVE FUN!
